It started the way most good ideas do, with a problem nobody else seemed to be solving. Perhaps we were silly, or just plain stupid, for thinking we could fix it. But we gave it a go anyway!
We were travelling constantly for work. Conferences in unfamiliar cities, early flights from airports we'd never been to, meetings at venues we'd only seen on a map. Every trip meant the same routine: open a hotel booking site, type in the city name, and scroll through hundreds of results scattered across the map, half of them miles from where we actually needed to be.
All we wanted was a simple answer: what are the closest hotels to where I need to be? Not the ones paying for the top ad slot. Not the ones with the best "deal" on the other side of town. Just the nearest ones, sorted by distance, so we could pick the best fit and get on with our day.
So we built it for ourselves. A small, scrappy tool that took a location, an airport, a conference centre, a stadium, then instantly showed us the closest hotels, ranked by how far they actually were. No noise, no clutter, no sponsored results pushing us somewhere we didn't want to stay.
It changed the way we travelled. We stopped wasting time scrolling and started arriving at hotels we could practically walk to from where we needed to be. Colleagues started to notice. "How do you always end up in the perfect hotel?" they'd ask after a conference. "You're always the first one at the venue, where are you staying?"
We started sharing the tool. First with teammates, then with friends, then with anyone who asked. The reaction was always the same: "Why doesn't this exist already?"
That's when we knew it wasn't just a side project, it was something people genuinely needed. NearestHotels was born from that realisation. We're building it to be the simplest, fastest way to find hotels near the places that matter to you, whether that's the Eiffel Tower, a music festival, or your terminal at JFK.
The first version in 2009 was a set of links to Travelocity and Orbitz that were optimised for searching some regular trips. In 2016, with some time off work, we rebuilt the site to be more dynamic. Over the years the system did start to break. In 2025 we've revived the site to what it is today with a database of over 200,000 hotels.
